The event aimed to highlight the importance of menstrual hygiene management as a vital aspect of women’s health and dignity. It sought to address the public health implications arising from the improper disposal of sanitary waste and explore sustainable disposal methods such as incineration and composting. Additionally, the event focused on encouraging awareness and education to promote safe disposal practices among youth and communities.
Summary
As part of the Swachhta Pakhwara initiative, Centre for Swachh Bharat Swastha Bharat ,IIS (deemed to be University), in collaboration with the Department of Sociology and Social Work and the Eco-Friendly Association, organized a guest lecture on “From Hygiene to Health: Safe Disposal and Public Health Implications.” The event aimed to create awareness about the importance of safe disposal practices and their direct connection to public health and environmental sustainability. Ms. Karuna Singh emphasized menstrual hygiene management as a critical issue that connects women’s health, social dignity, and environmental safety. She highlighted the health risks and environmental hazards posed by the unsafe disposal of sanitary waste and discussed practical solutions such as eco-friendly methods like incineration and composting. The lecture also underscored the responsibility of various stakeholders—including educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and policymakers—in raising awareness and ensuring the implementation of safe disposal practices. Additionally, students actively engaged in a discussion session, asking questions and sharing their perspectives on the topic.
Outcomes of the Event
The event successfully provided students with valuable insights into the important relationship between hygiene, safe disposal, and public health. It encouraged them not only to adopt responsible disposal practices themselves but also to advocate for these practices within their communities.
