An economist of eminence, Padmashree Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat is former Chairman of the University Grants Commission and the Indian Council of Social Science Research. Prof. Thorat is associated with a number of professional organizations and has held many significant positions at Universities and Research Institutes both in India and abroad.

An avid researcher, Prof. Thorat has published several books and more than 100 research papers. His areas of interest include the problems of excluded groups, socially inclusive growth, agricultural growth, caste and economic discrimination, labour market discrimination, and higher education.

In 2008 Prof. Thorat was conferred with the Padmashree, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in the field of literature and education. He has also been felicitated with the Babasaheb Ambedkar Ratna Award by the Delhi government for his dedication and extraordinary scholarship on the works and thoughts of Dr. Ambedkar and, more recently, the Dr. Ambedkar National Award for Social Understanding and Upliftment of Weaker Section. In his capacity as the founding Director of the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, Prof. Thorat has worked relentlessly towards Dalit empowerment.

Indeed, his contribution in advancing the goals of education and ensuring greater equality in the society are unparalleled and praiseworthy.

It is a matter of immense pride to welcome Padmashree Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat.
