Gender Champion Club, IIS (Deemed to be University) in collaboration with Rotary Club of IIS (Deemed to be University) organized an interactive session on April 10, 2021. The topic for the session was ‘LGBTQ Community’ which was graced by the presence of ingenious speaker Harish Iyer, LGBTQ Activist. It was an inspiring interactive session where speaker made an effort for creating an inclusive society where the people who are the part of LGBTQ Community did not face discrimination. The Speaker highlighted that a democratic country like India is struggling to accept LGBTQ Community. On the other hand an Islamic nation like Pakistan has accepted the community wonderfully. Speaker also discussed the differences between Equity and Equality and how Equity comes before Equality, Equity is the journey and is diverse where Equality means treating people equally and giving equal opportunities which gradually comes after Equity. Speaker then addressed the procedures and conflicts that were faced while grappling for the right of LGBTQ community. which was later recognised in 2018 by the Apex Body and Supreme Court of India.   It was decriminalised and the act was passed to protect the individuals of LGBTQ community.

The session was an effort to make students aware about the discrimination and problems faced by the people belonging to LGBTQ Community. Toward the end of the session the virtual stage was kept open for Questions from the audience. The discussion was successful in enlightening young minds and creating an inclusive society.

Outcome of the activity/event/seminar/workshop: The session created awareness amongst the students through the Speaker’s own experiences.
