Awareness session on Cyber Security and Women Shelter Homes

The Centre for Women Studies and Gender Championship Club, IIS (deemed to be University) and Income Tax Department organized an awareness session on the topic of ‘Cyber Security and Women Shelter Homes’ in association with SMILE Foundation on Friday, March 3rd, 2023 in A.V Hall on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The resource persons for the session were Ms. Prabha Kumawat, SMILE Foundation and Ms. Renu Gupta, SMILE Foundation to talk about various issues concerning women. Ms. Kumawat has more than 10 years of teaching experience. She is associated with SMILE Foundation since 2018 and has been addressing various issues related to women cyber security. Ms. Renu has been associated with SMILE Foundation since 2005 as a trainer.

The invited guests for the session were Ms. Chanchal Meena, Add. Commissioner of Income Tax; Ms. Anuradha, Add. Commissioner of Income Tax; Ms. Monisha, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax; Ms. Sonia Mahajan, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax; Ms. Ashmita Pathak, Income Tax Officer, Mr. Deepak Khanna and Mr. Ranveer Singh.

The session commenced with felicitation of all the guests by Dr. TN Mathur, Vice Chancellor, IIS (deemed to be University) and Dr. Raakhi Gupta, Registrar, IIS (deemed to be University). After that, Dr. Mathur delivered the welcome address. Ms. Anita Bhanwat, Founder of SMILE Foundation introduced the audience with the work of the foundation and problems faced by the foundation in their work; and how they have sent more than 180 children back to their home with continuous efforts.

Ms. Prabha discussed about cyber security in her address. She said how mobile and internet have become a basic need in our day to day life as many important and basic work is done through internet. She explained to students how online games, shopping, bank transactions, fake posts on social media platforms, online classes, matrimonial sites, free wifi, honey-trapping, etc. lead to the cyber fraud and crime. She also talked about various cyber crimes against women that is, cyber stalking, defamation, bullying, child pornography, image based abuse, obscene publication, harassment, etc. She further suggested various tools and ways that can be used to prevent cyber fraud and crime, such as using original software, anti-virus, secured password, etc. She also shared various sections of IT Act 2000, portals and help lines such as National Cyber Crime Reporting, Cyber Fraud helpline, Child helpline, etc. to refer in case of cyber crime and fraud. Ms. Renu shared about various women shelter homes that smile foundation operates to accommodate girls and women of various age groups. She also talked about how the homes are making efforts to educate the girls and make them financially independent.

The session concluded with the felicitation of guests by Ms. Chanchal Meena on behalf of Smile Foundation.

Outcome of the activity/event/seminar/workshop: The session helped the students understand the issues relate to cyber crime and cyber security. Students also got to know about various sections of IT Act 2000, portals and help lines such as National Cyber Crime Reporting, Cyber Fraud helpline, Child helpline, etc. to refer in case of cyber crime and fraud.
