Summary/Description (max 500 words):

Yaman is a sampurna (consists of 7 notes) raga from the Hindustani music tradition. It is one of the first ragas a Hindustani classical student learns and is considered to be one of the most fundamental ragas in the tradition. It covers concepts such as āroh-avrohnyāsvādi-samvādichalan of Raag Yaman. This lecture taught the melodic characteristics of Raag Yaman such as the prominent svaras and typical melodic progression. The students also learnt how to practice an ālap (unmetered opening piece) in Raag Yaman. It is one of the main and popular Raagas of Indian Classical Music. Students were guided step by step through the basics to advanced singing and understanding of the Raaga. The lecture was designed so that the student can sing along and follow what is being taught. This was done to replicate the situation of the student learning with a Guru or teacher. The student will be able to perform the raga. The lecture was designed to cater to intermediate learners. This was mainly intended for vocalists, however instrumentalist too can gain from learning the gayaki and (the vocal elements) of the ragas.

Outcome of the Lecture:

A good number of students learned about the basics of vocal music. This lecture taught the melodic characteristics of Raag Yaman such as the prominent svaras and typical melodic progression. It enhanced the skills of the budding singers which would have definitely helped them to groom themselves as a professional singer.
