A good number of students learned about the basics of music. “Music is a system of communication involving structured sounds produced by members of a community that communicate with other members” Indian classical music is a rich tradition that originated in South Asia and can now be found in all corners of the world. It’s origins date back to sacred Vedic scriptures over 6,000 years ago where chants developed a system of musical notes and rhythmic cycles. In this way, Indian classical music is very closely connected to nature, taking inspiration from natural phenomena including the seasons and times of the day to create ‘ragas’ or musical moods and many time cycles or ‘taals’ that have been further codified. Compositions are fixed but most of the music is improvised within the structure of notes and mathematics. This gives the music a spontaneous freedom where each artist and every performance is ensured to be completely unique. The demonstration session have presented a discussion of the fundamental concepts and nature of Indian light music. The three unities of Indian music, namely shruti aga and tala have been described in adequate detail, providing examples to aid general comprehension.
Outcome of the Lecture: The demo session provided bases for further exploration and the students were encouraged to attempt improvisation, which is the essence of Indian music. This demonstration session taught the melodic characteristics of light music such as the prominent svaras and typical melodic progression. It enhanced the skills of the budding singers which would have definitely helped them to groom themselves as a professional singer.
