Date of Event: 14th October 2017
Venue: Graphics Studio, Visual Arts Department
Morning: 9:35 am
Fine Arts Guild organized a “Wood Cut Technique and Printing” demonstration by Dr. Nirupama Singh, faculty of Painting Department, The IIS University. For this demonstration I used 6 types of wood-cut carving tools and wood block of 10X12inches, Printing ink ,Roller, newsprint sheets and printing paper. Firstly, I explained the students about complete process of wood cut technique. Woodcut is a relief printing artistic technique in printmaking. In which an image is carved into the surface of a block of wood, a sharp tool is used to crave away the parts which do not receive the inknd rest of the part absorbs the ink. The areas to show 'white' are cut away with a knife or chisel, leaving the characters or image to show in 'black' at the original surface level. The block is cut along the grain of the wood (unlike wood engraving where the block is cut in the end-grain). In the next step, the surface is covered with ink by rolling over the surface with an ink-covered roller, leaving ink upon the flat surface but not in the non-printing areas. Multiple colors can be printed by keying the paper to a frame around the woodblocks.
After explaining the whole process of woodcut, I gave demonstration of the process step by step. Firstly I demonstrated how to carve the wood with the help of tools, then how to roll ink on the wood with the help of roller, then I ended it by taking print of this wooden block. Students grabbed something important and useful from this woodcut technique of demonstration. And also, they came to know about a diverse technique.
