Summary/Description:

The Fashion & Textiles Guild Committee of the IIS (deemed to be University), organized a handloom weaving workshop for students on August 7th, 2021 for celebration of Handloom day and create awareness in students about the handloom. To honour the Swadeshi Movement, which was started on this day in 1905 in the Calcutta Town Hall to oppose the British Government's division of Bengal, August 7 was chosen as National Handloom Day. The initiative attempted to revive home production methods and goods.

For those who needed a solid foundation in the fundamentals of how to weave on a handloom or for beginning and intermediate students, this programme was appropriate. Under the direction of Dr. Sunetra Datt, Assistant Professor, IIS (deemed to be University), and Mrs. Tulsi Ram (Technical Assistant of Weaving), students have learned how to wind warps, dress a loom, thread in heddles and reeds, tie the warp on the loom, and make fabric samples. The workshop was organised to boost the income of the weavers and raise awareness of the role that handloom plays in the socioeconomic growth of the nation.

Outcome of the workshop:

  • Students gained knowlede about technicalities related to working process on looms. The workshop was helpful as the students for weaving on loom.
