About Spoken Tutorial

The Spoken Tutorial (ST) project is being developed at IIT Bombay. It is the initiative of the "Talk to a Teacher" project of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology, launched by MHRD, Govt of India.  It promotes IT literacy for education and improves the employment potential of learners in India, using FOSS (free and open source software).  This project is about teaching and learning a particular FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) like Linux, Scilab, LaTeX, PHP & MySQL, Java, C/C++, LibreOffice etc. via an easy Video tool, through Distance Learning Mode. The spoken part of ST is dubbed into all Indian languages and one can use ST to learn a topic, called a tutorial.

Benefits for the students/faculty

• E-Tutor can be used to assist in practical labs
• Online tests and certificates by IIT Bombay without any extra fees. These certificates give an edge to IISU students during placements by increasing their employability potential
• Teachers can also be trained on various open source software.

What ST Courses provides to the learners?

Spoken tutorial offers a number of courses. Each course contains the following:

• a number of audio-videos of approx. 10-minute duration each.
• assignment
• programming code files (if any)
• slides of audio-video in pdf format
• detailed instruction sheet for each course that contains:
  • instructions for accessing the tutorial both in online and offline mode
  • procedure and instructions to practice
  • instructions for accessing code files and assignments
• installation sheet that explains the procedure of the installation of the required software on both Windows and Linux Operating System
• Forum help is also available. Here, learners can post questions on a particular portion of a specific tutorial, at: https://forums.spoken-tutorial.org/

Assessment Strategy of Spoken Tutorial

• MCQ-based test and duration of the exam: 45 min.
• Passing percentage: above 40%
• Remedial test in case student does not clear the exam after 15 days.
• Certificate on clearing the exam from Spoken Tutorial, IIT Bombay.
