Objective of the workshop:

  • Identify and understand the heritage craft techniques of hand embroidery.
  • To create their own products through embroidery with innovative motifs.

Summary/Description:

Traditional chenille embroidery is made with a single, continuous yarn worked into the material and raised in a loop or pile. Commonly recognized by loops of yarn, chenille provides a soft fuzzy carpet-like appearance. Because chenille work is done with yarn instead of thread, it is not generally used for small intricate designs. Chenille is a recognizable, unique embroidery technique.

In this activity student learn the basic stitches and flowers on a composition. The resource person demonstrated how to use velvet, mirror work and cut work on cotton fabric or velvet fabric. He explained to the students about the process of using different embroidery stitches to create beautiful designs. He gave demonstration on design development by using various stitches with various needles. The artist demonstrated the technique and helped the students to actually make their own samples. Students also learnt the applications of these skills by looking at various samples that had been put on display.

Chain stitch, mirror and cut work embroidery stitches that will help for complete the student’s project and give the confidence to keep stitching and explore new patterns.

Outcome of the workshop:

  • They gained knowledge about the traditional techniques hand embroideries.
  • They also developed with this techniques for creative product development.
  • To explore surface embellishment through color and texture.
