A Guest lecture on Waste Management Techniques was organized by the Centre for Swachh Bharat- Swastha Bharat and Department of Sociology on 4 October, 2021 in A.V. Hall for students of undergraduate and postgraduate programme of the university.  The lecture was attended by 32 students. Dr. Nivedita Kaul shared the information that we are generating tons of waste everyday but the collection efficiency is less. Huge amount of money is being spent but the money is not being used for processing. Instead it is being spent only on collection and dumping. Crude dumping is takin place. The landfill sites are changing and there is open dumping of solid waste. This type of waste disposal mechanism is posing environmental threats. These landfill sites often catch fire. Methane gas is being released. The smart cities aim to achieve zero waste by implementing strategies for segregation and collection of waste. She discussed about strategies to create zero waste homes through recycling of organic wastes and also use of incinerators for disposal of sanitary pads. She stressed that solid waste management rules should be properly implemented. The individuals should also participate in management of waste.  The will to manage waste is missing.  We should apply the principle of refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle for proper management of waste.

The session was followed by question answer round. The students raised queries about proper proper segregation and management of waste. The session proved to be fruitful for the students  as they learned various waste management techniques which could be applied at the individual level.
